Interesting resource..

I've recently come across a review website designed to help students on the AP Calc, AP US, and AP WH exams called getafive.com.  I think it may be helpful to many of you so it might be worth taking a look around.  I've created a class page you can log into and access video lessons, take review quizzes about content, take a diagnostic quiz thing to see your APWH strengths and weaknesses, as well as take a practice exam.

The code to enter the Period 4 group is 7429AFE.  It is free to sign up.

Even if you don't take part in all the extras, there are three videos about the Comparative essay you should check out!

Plan for the rest of the week...

Class 10/17:  Notes on the Rise of the Roman Empire and Roman Society
Homework 10/17:  Read the sections about each religion/philosophy YOU wrote about in your essay. Complete outline/venn diagram for the religions/philosophies (ex/ Daoism/Buddhism or Zoroastrianism/Hinduism).   Make sure you have read the rest of CH 11.  Study for the test!

Class 10/18:  Outlining the essay/essay format for optimum scores.  Most people need help on this so we will spend the class going over your venn diagrams, outlining the essay together.

See below for a reminded about the essay rewrite policy.  Over the weekend, read the orange section on pg _________ and post an answer to the question in italics.  Study for the test!

Classical Era Class Notes

Although some are already posted, here are the class notes for the entire Classical Unit (Persia - Greece; I'll add Rome here after)

Persia - CH7
China - CH8
India - CH9
Greece - CH10
Rome - CH11

Homework 10/15 (and a fair warning)

Welcome to Rome (the place of perpetual daylight)!  Tonight, please read pgs 259-271.  Pgs 259-265 we've already gone over in class, so you can skim these!

HEADS UP - Rome is the last section we will cover in this unit.  Be aware that at the end of units come end of unit tests..which will most likely be sometime in the first part of next week.  This is your warning - do not put off studying til the last minute.  We will review in class before the test and I will stay after for extra help the day before, and I will give you the actual date when I have a better idea of specifics.  The test will cover Persia, China (Qin and Han), India (Mauryan and Gupta), Greece, and Rome.

Plan for the rest of the week...

We will begin working on a class project, titled 'Classical Thinkers Go to Starbucks'..because who doesn't love classical thinkers AND a nice cup of java?

The assignment is written up HERE

Your group assignments are listed HERE

The reading for the assignment is linked up HERE

**Edit:  The rubric for the assignment is linked up HERE

Tonight, read your section of the reading. You will have all class period on Thursday to meet in groups and create a game plan.  Someone in your group should make a GoogleDoc to work from and share it with me and your group members (has to be done from a desktop/laptop).  Tomorrow in class you should decide which philosopher everyone is going to be (one from each of the four regions, no more than two from the same region) and you will get your topic.  Then you can start your dialogue.

Your Thinkers go to Starbucks project is due Tuesday, October 15.

Friday in class we will write a comparison essay.  It will cover the regions we have talked about in class (Persia to Greece) and will focus on the religions/philosophies of the regions.  Remember, you will need to know similarities and differences between each religion/philosophy.

Helpful Handout: I found this online..it's a fairly comprehensive and provides links to other helpful resources.  For the essay Friday, you do not  need to know about the Roman religion or Christianity.

Cave's are spooky..

For tonight's homework we are going to run head first into the 'cave' and read about people who make their way out of 'the cave'.  Perhaps you can tell that the 'cave' is not really a cave, but a metaphor for something else.

Read the first chapter from Plato's 'The Republic' - The Allegory of the Cave and we will talk about it tomorrow! It's a tricky read (and long) but mull it over in your mind a bit and see if you can figure it out :)

Homework 10/7

For homework tonight, watch the following clips about Alexander the Great.  Adding up all the individual parts is about 45 of viewing time.  If you have 4 hours, you can totally watch the whole thing, although I hope you have something more productive you could be doing for three hours of your time.  After watching the clips, post your response to the following statement on your blog:

"Does Alexander the Great deserve to be called 'the Great'?  Why or why not?

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (Part Two)

2:00 - 8:00 -  In Iraq, on the plane with the Brits
28:26 - 34:00ish - Persepolis burns
43:53 - 47:40 - death of Darius

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (Part Three - Across the Hindu Kush)
Opens in Kabul, which shows the state of the city before the US invasion (not pretty).  They then go to the equivalent of the MFA in Kabul, kind of sad.
7:00 - 11:00 - good look at the terrain, once again, car trouble
18:37 - 23:00 - Woods finds the root plant and tries to eat it, not troubled by the gunfire
36:30 - 38:30  - Bessus captured, the formation of Alexandria
45:00 - 47:30 - Cleutis' Death
52:00 - 57:30 - Marry Roxanne - declaration of worship as a god, Persian style. Assassination attempt, and falling out with Calisthenes

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (Part Four - To the ends of the Earth)
32:30 - 36:30 on the wall
46:00 - 48:30 - the march begins, water dumping incident
50:00 - 55:00 - the Death of Alexander
