Thanksgiving Break Assignment

Over each vacation this year (Thanksgiving, Christmas, February, April) you are required to complete a book/film project.  This is the same project for each vacation so if you were being a fastidious planner you could basically do these project whenever.

The description of this assignment is linked up HERE.  Remember - you can substitute the word 'book' for the word 'film' and complete the assignment as designed.  You may do up to two fictional books, one non-fiction book, and one film.  All films must be approved by me beforehand (NO DISNEY!)

Here is the link to the RUBRIC I will use to grade you on this project.  Please be aware of the difference between 'meets expectations' and 'exceeds expectations'.

A list of books and films is linked up HERE. Again, if you would like to do a book/film that is not on the list you must gain approval by me first (an email is okay).  Use your judgement and the quality/type of books that are already on the list to see if your choice of book/film is up to the content/rigorous standards of APWH.

Side note - I hate reading books about things I don't like (ex/ the War of 1812 - gross.)   I wouldn't read that book carefully or give it my best level of work/effort.  Choose a book that sounds like something you'd be interested in.  It makes a world of difference.

Finally, answer the following question on your blog (it can be the same post as the first answers):  In what ways is Al-Ghazali's thinking similar to Plato's Allegory of The Cave?  In what ways do they diverge?

ALSO - Baghdad pamphlet due.

Long Weekend Homework

and just when we all start to get bogged down with the stress and workload of school, a long weekend comes to save the day!

This weekend, study for a Ch13 Byzantine quiz on Wednesday.  The format of the quiz will be 5 identifications (what is it?) and its significance/importance to the Byzantine Empire.  The words will be taken from the quizlet on the Byzantine Empire slideshow (or the handout) but beware - those are mostly just definitions.  There will also be 10 multiple choice questions.

ID Format Example- Bezant - the unit of currency in the Byzantine empire.  It is significant because it becomes the standard unit of currency in the Mediterranean region, which represents the extent of trade done by the Byzantine empire in that region.

I will be out on Wednesday, but I will make sure the sub has the quizzes for you.

Wednesday night homework: Read pg 345-352 (to expansion).

Happy November (Rabbit, Rabbit)

Working with everyone's favorite mega-information hub today, Wikipedia (see, it has school uses)

You can search 'Decline of the Roman Empire' (or click the link).  Wiki will give you way more information than you need so you can skim through most of the entry.  First, read the section entitled 'Highlights' to refresh your memory of what happened as the empire was collapsing.

Then focus on Theories of a Fall, Decline, Transition and Continuity.  Wiki breaks the collective fall of Rome into four categories: Decay, Monocausal, Catastrophic collapse, and Transformation.  In your groups, read the Highlights then section assigned to you (see below).  Discuss it in your group and come to a consensus about the what theory is.

THEN - in your group, create a Imperial 'To Do List' for the Emperor to help him save the Roman empire (pre-collapse).  What can be done to address the issues?  Aim for at least 8 tasks.

Homework

  • Post on your blog whether or not you agree with the collapse theory you read about.  What does it explain well/where does it fall short?

  • Study for a quiz on Monday - 15 Vital Vocab words (will be matching) and 20 MC about Ch 12.  I'm going to count them as separate quizzes on Aspen.

YOUR ACTIVITY GROUPS
1) Kim, Tori, Maya, Cassi, Sabrina - Decay
2)  Ashay, Dillon, Dan, Chris, Arvind - Monocausal
3)  Kush, Nathan, Hafsa, Michelle, Shravya - Catastrophic Collapse
4)  Rachel, Anjali, Shivesh, Tom, Olivia - Transformation

Interesting resource..

I've recently come across a review website designed to help students on the AP Calc, AP US, and AP WH exams called getafive.com.  I think it may be helpful to many of you so it might be worth taking a look around.  I've created a class page you can log into and access video lessons, take review quizzes about content, take a diagnostic quiz thing to see your APWH strengths and weaknesses, as well as take a practice exam.

The code to enter the Period 4 group is 7429AFE.  It is free to sign up.

Even if you don't take part in all the extras, there are three videos about the Comparative essay you should check out!

Plan for the rest of the week...

We will begin working on a class project, titled 'Classical Thinkers Go to Starbucks'..because who doesn't love classical thinkers AND a nice cup of java?

The assignment is written up HERE

Your group assignments are listed HERE

The reading for the assignment is linked up HERE

**Edit:  The rubric for the assignment is linked up HERE

Tonight, read your section of the reading. You will have all class period on Thursday to meet in groups and create a game plan.  Someone in your group should make a GoogleDoc to work from and share it with me and your group members (has to be done from a desktop/laptop).  Tomorrow in class you should decide which philosopher everyone is going to be (one from each of the four regions, no more than two from the same region) and you will get your topic.  Then you can start your dialogue.

Your Thinkers go to Starbucks project is due Tuesday, October 15.

Friday in class we will write a comparison essay.  It will cover the regions we have talked about in class (Persia to Greece) and will focus on the religions/philosophies of the regions.  Remember, you will need to know similarities and differences between each religion/philosophy.

Helpful Handout: I found this online..it's a fairly comprehensive and provides links to other helpful resources.  For the essay Friday, you do not  need to know about the Roman religion or Christianity.

Cave's are spooky..

For tonight's homework we are going to run head first into the 'cave' and read about people who make their way out of 'the cave'.  Perhaps you can tell that the 'cave' is not really a cave, but a metaphor for something else.

Read the first chapter from Plato's 'The Republic' - The Allegory of the Cave and we will talk about it tomorrow! It's a tricky read (and long) but mull it over in your mind a bit and see if you can figure it out :)

Homework 9/18

Daoism...what the what?

It's tricky I know.  Tonight for homework, look at THESE excerpts from the Dao De Jing.  You should focus on numbers 1, 3, 8, 11, and 12.  Read them once.  Mull them over.  Read them again.  Try to figure out their deeper meaning.  They're meant to be ellusive, paradoxical, and provocative.  If you feel like you understand them after just one reading, you're probably not doing it right.

Once you think you understand the Dao De Jing, come up with a one sentence that describes what Daoism is all about.  Post this sentence on your blog.

Dao De Jing

History Heads, Part Deux (and reading for tonight)

For the second part of the History Head assignment, you'll need to access the class Protopage, linked HERE.  You should bookmark this page, we'll be coming back to it several times this year. When you click on a classmate's name, their blog should pop up.

Once you have hung up your poster, you will do a gallery of your class mates work and make note of the images or symbols they chose for the same countries as you, or how they interpreted the themes differently.

You will  choose two classmate's blogs to assess further, however, they cannot be someone who completed the same region/society as you (ex/ if you did China, you can't choose another China).  You are going to be posting on your classmates' blogs in their comments section and you will also be copying and pasting the comments you made on their blog in your blog, as a new post.

A good comment should look like the following:
1)  A greeting!
2)  A compliment - something you thought they did well;
3)  Constructive critique - point out something that could have been better and suggest a way to make it better;
4)  Describe one way your society and their society are similar / how they overlap;
5)  Describe one way your society and their society were different;
6)  Ask at least one question to the author - what would you like to know more about?  This could be about why they chose a particular image, clarification, or layout issues etc;
7)  Sign your post (Sincerely, / Your pal, / etc)

In addition to your blog post, you will read pgs 159-168 about Persia.  I strongly suggest taking written notes, but I will not be checking them...

History Head Assignment, Part One

Today we will be working on a project to help us to start thinking about the major themes of APWH and how they apply to each of the cultures we will be studying.

You have each been assigned to a region discussed in Ch 1-6 (time period 8000BCE-600CE) and you will use your history head to describe how each of the themes applies to your society on both an individual level (inside the head) and for your society as a whole (outside the head).

A description of the project is can be found HERE.  If you continue scrolling to the second page of that document you will see a list of the five themes.  There also is a blank history head image below if you need an extra for whatever reason.

This website gives you a more detailed explanation of each of the themes.

The rubric you will be graded with can be found HERE.  Reminder - in order to score a 4 you must exceed expectations!

Your history head poster and the accompanying blog post (see task I of the assignment sheet) are due on Monday, September 9th

Part Deux of the History Head Project will commence on Monday during the class period.
